What Spotify currently says
Spotify states that its Normal setting adjusts playback toward -14 dB LUFS using ITU-R BS.1770 measurement. Louder tracks receive negative gain. A quieter track may receive positive gain only while sufficient peak headroom remains.
The service also documents album normalization, where relative level differences between songs are preserved, and track normalization for shuffled or mixed-album playback. Spotify notes that the web player and some third-party devices may not use normalization, so a single listening path is not the whole picture.
Why -14 LUFS is not a mastering commandment
Integrated LUFS summarizes perceived level over time. It does not describe punch, density, spectral balance or whether limiting sounds musical. Two masters at the same integrated value can feel very different.
A dynamic acoustic track may suit a lower integrated level; a dense electronic release may be intentionally louder. Compare at normalized listening level, then choose the balance of impact and distortion that serves the music. Do not chase an exact decimal at the expense of transients.
True peak and codec headroom
Sample peaks only inspect stored samples. A reconstructed waveform can peak between them, and lossy encoding can create additional overs. ITU-R BS.1770 defines a true-peak estimation method; meters usually oversample to estimate those inter-sample events.
Spotify currently recommends keeping a master at or below -1 dBTP, and below -2 dBTP for material mastered louder than -14 LUFS. Treat that as platform guidance that can change, not as proof that a file will be distortion-free on every codec and device.
A practical delivery check
Keep a high-quality lossless master. Measure integrated loudness and true peak with a standards-aware meter, then audition a level-matched encode. Check the loudest chorus and any exposed transients rather than relying on a green status light.
Finally, verify current requirements with your distributor. Spotify says it prepares both compressed and lossless playback from one high-quality stereo master; your distributor may impose its own accepted formats or metadata rules.
