Map the defect before choosing the processor
Loop the smallest section that reveals the problem, then locate it by time, frequency and channel. Is it continuous broadband fizz, a narrow whistle, unstable pitch, a transient click, smeared consonants or a stereo image that folds down poorly? Each needs a different response.
Use a spectrogram as supporting evidence, not as a quality verdict. Published research has found spectral artifacts in particular model architectures, while other research shows detectors can depend on dataset and production-pipeline cues. Similar-looking patterns can also come from codecs, denoising and conventional processing.
Treat metallic or brittle high frequencies conservatively
First compare against a lossless or less processed render. If the harshness is broad, try a small high-shelf reduction or smooth roll-off. If it appears only on vocals or cymbals, dynamic equalization or de-essing can reduce it without permanently darkening the entire track.
Narrow spectral repair may help an isolated whistle, but many deep notches can hollow the timbre. Stop when the artifact no longer distracts at normal listening level; do not optimize a zoomed spectrogram while the music gets worse.
Handle clicks, smears and unstable details at the right stage
Isolated clicks can often be repaired locally with interpolation or a short edit. Repeated transient smearing may respond to restrained transient shaping, but strong settings can exaggerate codec noise. Garbled words, impossible note transitions and changing instrument identity are structural generation errors; regenerate, edit or replace the passage when possible.
Broadband denoising should be a last resort on a finished mix. Listen for watery modulation, disappearing ambience and damaged attacks. A little stable noise can be less objectionable than a constantly changing restoration residue.
Master the repaired file, then test real outputs
After repair, address overall tone, dynamics, width and level. Check true peak, mono compatibility and a representative lossy encode. Compare against the untouched render at matched loudness so extra brightness or level is not mistaken for improvement.
Keep notes on every repair and retain the original. Processing can change features used by a detector, but that does not establish origin and it does not make the work “human-made.” Use detector results only as uncertain third-party signals, never as certificates.
